American West Roadside StopThe Wild & Scenic Rogue River Gorge near Union Creek, OregonStory & Photography by Gerald B. AllenRogue River Gorge Viewpoint - Rogue River-Siskiyou National ForestEnroute from White's City to Crater Lake National Park, we made a short stop at the Rogue River Gorge Viewpoint, located about a 1/4 mile north of the community of Union Creek, Oregon just off of Oregon Highway-62. A short 1/4 mile paved loop trail takes visitors to spectacular views of the Upper Rogue Wild and Scenic River as it cascades through a constricted channel of basalt lava. Passing through this narrow, turbulent gorge of black lava, the Upper Rogue River will soon disappear as it plunges entirely underground into a lava tube for about 250 feet at Natural Bridge just south of Union Creek. The Upper Rogue River features several waterfalls, although the more spectacular falls are located on National Creek and Muir Creek tributaries. Upper Rogue River TrailThe entire length of the Upper Rogue Wild and Scenic River is closely followed by the Upper Rogue River Trail 1034. Due to the various road crossings, hikers can easily travel short 3.5 to 10 mile sections of the trail. The connecting 3.5 mile Rogue Gorge Trail 1034A also offers spectacular views of the Upper Rogue Wild and Scenic River cascading through a constricted channel of basalt lava. The trail begins at the Natural Bridge Viewpoint parking lot and travels upriver on the east side of the Upper Rogue Wild and Scenic River. The Upper Rogue River Trail traverses the west side of the river. You pass by Natural Bridge and Union Creek Campgrounds before arriving at the Rogue Gorge, located just off Highway 62 north of the Union Creek Resort.
