Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexicoby Joseph A. Sprince - Photography by Gerald B. AllenCarlbad Caverns contains some of the west's most beautiful and unusual natural wonders. You may take an elevator directly to the bottom and tour the world famous Big Room, or hike the steep but spectacular one-mile paved trail (left) from the cave's natural entrance. One of the highlights of this trail is the highly decorative Devil's Spring (shown right). The Big Room is generally considered the highlight of Carlsbad Caverns. One of the world's largest underground chambers, it features scenery and formations on a grand scale. The Hall of the Giants (right) features formations which are up to sixty feet tall. At left is a closeup of gigantic stalactites growing from the ceiling of the Big Room. You may also take the King's Palace tour to view several extremely decorative smaller rooms which are much more intimate. A panorama of the Big Room. The nearby Guadalupe mountains are covered by an infrequent blanket of snow.
