Yosemite National Park, California - El Capitanby Joseph A. Sprince - Photography by Gerald B. AllenHere is our black and white version of Yosemite National Park's famed El Capitan. Maybe not an Ansel Adams, but not bad! The giant monolith rises about 3,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley. A favorite subject for photographers, El Capitan is also the favored challenge of many rock climbers. On any given day there may be several parties on the rock face. It is a challenge to see them, even with binoculars. The formations in Yosemite were created by glacial action. This is in contrast to the formations seen in our numerous canyon country segments, which were caused by flowing water.
